Nd:YAP is a well-known laser crystal for high output power resonators, and especially suitable for lasers with electro-optic cells or harmonic generators for its polarized output. The 1340nm emission wavelength of Nd:YAP is more advantageous for application in laser medicine than 1319nm emission wavelength of Nd:YAG.

There are 2 kinds of method to define the space group of YAP crystal, respectively Pnma and Pbnm.
The a axis defined in Pbnm is equivalent to the c axis in Pnma;
The b axis defined in Pbnm is equivalent to the a axis in Pnma;
The c axis defined in Pbnm is equivalent to the b axis in Pnma.
